As the Art Director of IF, why did I choose this photograph for this cover?

When I think of technology and business the first thing that comes to my mind is the fast paced, hectic, “always connected” way of life that we meander through each day. I think of the commute that we all travel (in one way or another) to get to our meetings, place of business, power lunches or play dates. This photo and many others that Mr. Ruse has taken, visualized that for me. He captured the “hum drum” look on people’s faces, the disconnection from humanness. Their faces almost take on a drone-like quality.

It is always the assumption that technology makes our lives easier, somehow less cluttered. However, it seems as though we are more cluttered. Check the email, the second email, the cell phone messages, text messages, home phone, pager…it is the “new clutter” of our lives. Some of us can not even go through a dinner without being reachable through some high tech gadget. Are we becoming drones to our technology? Through his photographs of “the commute” Travis Ruse allows us to take a peak at the people we see everyday going to and from. He allows us to see them from a different angle. To see their humanness. We can connect with them instead of rushing past them or tuning them out with our cell phones or our “ipods“. It is very interesting , the things we miss because our eyes and ears elsewhere.
